http://www.arts-museum.ru

28.03.2015 - 21.06.2015
http://www.hermitagemuseum.org

http://www.musee-jacquemart-andre.com

Defining beauty. the body in ancient Greek art

26 March – 5 July 2015
http://www.britishmuseum.org

Experience the brilliance and diversity of ancient Greek art in this major exhibition focusing on the human body.

For centuries the ancient Greeks experimented with ways of representing the human body, both as an object of beauty and a bearer of meaning.

The remarkable works of art in the exhibition range from abstract simplicity of prehistoric figurines to breathtaking realism in the age of Alexander the Great. These works continued to inspire artists for hundreds of years, giving form to thought and shaping our own perceptions of ourselves.

'The chief forms of beauty are order, symmetry and clear delineation’ – Aristotle

'In portraying ideal types of beauty... you bring together from many models the most beautiful features of each' – Socrates

Great British Drawings

26 March – 31 August 2015
http://www.ashmolean.org

The collection of British drawings and watercolours in the Ashmolean is one of the largest and most important in the world. Great British Drawings shows more than one hundred works by some of the country’s greatest artists, to trace the history of drawing in Britain. Many of the drawings are shown for the first time in public.

The collection in the Ashmolean ranges widely, from Flemish artists working in Britain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, to the experiments in modernism instigated on the Continent and enthusiastically taken up by the British after the First World War.

Velázquez

25 Mars 2015 - 13 Juillet 2015
http://www.grandpalais.fr

http://www.rusmuseum.ru/

Rogier van der Weyden

24 March - 28 June 2015
https://www.museodelprado.es/

This exhibition is organised in conjunction with the restoration of the great Crucifixion in El Escorial, which is currently being undertaken at the Prado as part of a collaborative institutional agreement between the Museum and Patrimonio Nacional.

The exhibition will provide a unique and remarkable opportunity to see The Crucifixion, The Descent from the Cross and The Durán Virgin alongside other works by the Flemish artist that were in Spain from an early date, such as the celebrated Miraflores Triptych (now Berlin, Gemäldegalerie). As a result, the exhibition will allow for an appreciation of the artist’s finest and most fully documented works, as well as analysing different and fundamental aspects of Van der Weyden’s creative activity, such as the close links between his works and sculpture, the far-reaching subsequent influence of his art and its repercussion in Spain.

Painting Paradise: The Art of the Garden

20th March 2015 - 11th October 2015
www.royalcollection.org.uk

Whether a sacred sanctuary, a place for scientific study, a haven for the solitary thinker or a space for pure enjoyment and delight, gardens are where man and nature meet.

Painting Paradise: The Art of the Garden reveals the way in which gardens have been celebrated in art across four centuries. Bringing together paintings, botanical studies, drawings, books, manuscripts and decorative arts, the exhibition explores the changing character of the garden from the 16th to the early 20th century. It includes works by Leonardo da Vinci, Maria Sibylla Merian and Carl Fabergé, and some of the earliest and rarest surviving depictions of gardens and plants.

Hieronymus Bosch. The legacy

March 19 to June 15, 2015
http://www.skd.museum

This exhibition, which demonstrates how the work of the painter Hieronymus Bosch lived on in a multiplicity of ways in prints of the early modern period and even into the 18th century, celebrates the recent acquisition of the triptych “The End of Time, Heaven and Hell” after Bosch. This engraving was published by the Antwerp printmaker Hieronymus Cock, who operated at international level and whose workshop was instrumental in disseminating Bosch’s artistic legacy throughout Europe. A total of 41 individual works and sheets selected from 20 different series of prints are on show. Along with books, paintings, items of treasury art, and decorative objects, they illustrate the significance in various fields of artistic creation of Boschian figures, monsters, demons and fantastic creatures.

The works focus on themes of the virtues and vices of humanity, as well as its dreams and fantasies. While Hieronymus Bosch’s works were originally shaped by Christian-clericalist attitudes, during the Renaissance his panels were regarded as painted prophecies of the collapse of the Christian community of faith and the imminent end of the world. At the same time, his motifs and chimeric creatures inspired a new aesthetic of the grotesque, which challenged the existing boundaries of classical art.

Tamara de Lempicka

Dal 19 Marzo 2015 al 30 Agosto 2015
http://www.mostratamara.it/

The Tudors

18 March - 19 July 2015
museeduluxembourg.fr

Of all the dynasties that have succeeded one another on the English throne, the Tudors, who reigned between 1485 and 1603, are certainly one of the most popular. Apart from the legend largely inspired by their private lives, the sovereigns left a deep imprint on the history of the kingdom: politically, by giving it a strategic position in Europe; spiritually, by breaking away from the Catholic Church; and culturally, by welcoming the Renaissance. Artists from Italy, Flanders and Germanic countries entered the service of the court to meet the new need for Royal portraits. It was at the confines of all these influences, in a country undergoing great upheavals, that the original forms of the English Renaissance were developed. This exhibition is the first in France on the subject.

Pierre Bonnard. Peindre l'Arcadie

17 mars - 19 juillet 2015
http://www.musee-orsay.fr

Ten Picassos from the Kunstmuseum Basel

16 March 2015 - 13 September 2015
https://www.museodelprado.es

During the spring and summer of 2015, the Museo del Prado will be presenting ten masterpieces by Pablo Picasso from the collection of the Kunstmuseum Basel while that institution is closed for alterations. Ten works by the Malaga-born artist, dating between 1906 and 1967, will thus offer a small retrospective to be shown in the Central Gallery of the Villanueva Building alongside some of the Museum’s greatest masterpieces.

This project is part of a broader collaborative agreement between the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Museo del Prado and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, which will also be presenting a selection of works from the Swiss museum.

Modigliani e la Bohème di Parigi

14 Marzo al 12 Luglio 2015
http://www.gamtorino.it

Power and Pathos. Bronze Sculpture of the Hellenistic World

14 March−21 June 2015
http://www.palazzostrozzi.org

Using outstanding examples of large-scale bronze sculptures, the exhibition sets out to explore the development of art in the Hellenistic age as it spread from Greece throughout the Mediterranean between the 4th and 1st centuries BC.
The use of bronze, with its unique characteristics, allowed artists to impart an unprecedented level of dynamism to their full-figure statues and of naturalism to their portraits, where psychological expression became a hallmark of the style.
Thanks to the valuable cooperation of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, and with the contribution of Bank of America, the exhibition will be hosting pieces from many of the world's leading archaeological museums. The monumental statues of gods and goddesses, athletes and warriors, will be on display alongside portraits of poweful public figures, together with a number of works in marble or stone selected for the fascinating way in which they successfully emulate bronze.

Henri Rousseau

6 March - 5 July 2015
http://palazzoducale.visitmuve.it

Henri Rousseau, called Le Douanier (1844-1910) La Charmeuse de serpents [The Snake Charmer] 1907 Oil on canvas H. 169; W. 189.5 cm Paris, Musée d'Orsay, Jacques Doucet bequest, 1936
Henri Rousseau, called Le DouanierThe Snake Charmer© RMN-Grand Palais (Musée d'Orsay) / Hervé Lewandowski

Two years after the major exhibition Manet. Ritorno a Venezia, the Public Establishment of the Musée d'Orsay and Musée de l'Orangerie is once again joining forces with the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia to organise an extensive exhibition dedicated to Henri Rousseau, aka Le Douanier. Works by Henri Rousseau conserved at our two museums have been loaned for this event for display in the Ducal Palace, in the apartments of the Doge’s Palace, forming the heart of a presentation celebrating the originality of the French painter through the prism of his relations to archaism.

It would be futile to try to label Henri Rousseau's work (Laval, 1844 - Paris, 1910) as his painting defies any attempt at categorisation. The story of his recognition is thus based on a series of misunderstandings. Both rejected by critics for his "naive" style and appreciated by artists for the very same reason, Henri Rousseau declared himself a "realist" painter. This exhibition thus aims to underline the paradox of an eminently singular artist whose works are nonetheless anchored in his era, by comparing his painting to some of his sources of inspiration, those of a 19th century divided between academism and new painting, and to works by avant-garde artists who enthroned him as the father of modernity.

Leonora Carrington

6 March – 31 May 2015
http://www.tate.org.uk/

Leonora Carrington invites you to discover the fantastical creations of the prolific painter and internationally celebrated member of the surrealist movement, Leonora Carrington (1917-2011).
The exhibition explores Carrington’s diverse creative practice, taking a selection of key paintings made throughout her career as its starting point. A prolific painter, the exhibition explores how Carrington established her distinctive take on surrealism. Working alongside other key members of the movement, such as Salvador Dali and Max Ernst, her paintings, filled with eccentric characters which shift between plant, animal, human, objects and everything in between, will remind visitors unfamiliar with her work of her better known peers.

http://muar.ru

http://www.rusmuseum.ru

Matisse. Arabesque

4 marzo - 21 giugno 2015
http://www.scuderiequirinale.it/

Inventing Impressionism

4 March – 31 May 2015
http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk

“Without him,” said Monet “we wouldn’t have survived.”

So universally popular are the Impressionists today, it’s hard to imagine a time when they weren’t. But in the early 1870s they struggled to be accepted. Shunned by the art establishment, they were even lambasted as ‘lunatics’ by one critic.

One man, however, recognised their worth from the beginning. Paul Durand-Ruel, an entrepreneurial art dealer from Paris, discovered this group of young artists – including Monet, Degas, Manet, Renoir, Pissarro and Sisley – and gambled.

Realising the fashionable potential of their derided ‘impressions’ of urban and suburban life, Durand-Ruel dedicated the rest of his life to building an audience for their work – creating the modern art market in the process.

Such was his perseverance, Durand-Ruel nearly bankrupted himself twice, before successfully globalising his operation with outposts in London, Brussels and New York, and establishing the one-man show as the international norm for exhibitions.

The ‘Impressionists’ – a term first used derogatively by critics – was to become the household name that stands today.

‘Inventing Impressionism’ features 85 masterpieces from the movement, all but one having passed through Durand-Ruel’s hands, including three of Renoir’s famous ‘Dances’ and five from Monet’s ‘Poplars’ series.
