The Paris of Toulouse-Lautrec: Prints and Posters

July 26, 2014–March 1, 2015
http://www.moma.org

A preeminent artist of Belle Époque Paris, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901) brought the language of the late-19th-century avant-garde to a broad public through his famous posters, prints, and illustrations for journals and magazines. A cultural nexus, he connected artists, performers, authors, intellectuals, and society figures of his day, creating a bridge between the brothels and society salons of the moment. His work allows entry into many facets of Parisian life, from politics to visual culture and the rise of popular entertainment in the form of cabarets and café-concerts. This exhibition, drawn almost exclusively from The Museum of Modern Art’s stellar collection of posters, lithographs, printed ephemera, and illustrated books, is the first MoMA exhibition in 30 years dedicated solely to Lautrec, and features over 100 examples of the best-known works created during the apex of his career.

Organized thematically, the exhibition explores five subjects that together create a portrait of Lautrec’s Paris. A section devoted to café-concerts and dance halls examines the rise of nightlife culture in France through the depiction of famous venues, including the celebrated Moulin Rouge. Another focuses on the actresses, singers, dancers, and performers who sparked the artist’s imagination and served as his muses, including Yvette Guilbert, acclaimed dancer Loie Fuller, and close friend Jane Avril.

Kazimir Malevich

16th July 2014 - 26th October 2014
www.tate.org.uk

Kazimir Malevich (1878–1935) was a deeply radical and influential figure in modern art. His breaking away from century-old traditions of painting and representation coincided with one of the most turbulent moments in 20th century history, from the First World War through the October Revolution to the rise of Stalinism.

This groundbreaking exhibition, the first major Malevich retrospective for almost 25 years, will offer an expansive view of his career in its entirety. The exhibition is based on the historic collaboration of the Stedelijk Museum, the Khardzhiev Foundation and the Costakis Collection, with key loans from public and private collections around the world, including the State Russian Museum and State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, MoMA in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Virginia Woolf was one of the most important and celebrated writers of the twentieth century. This extensive exhibition of portraits and rare archival material will explore her life and achievements as a novelist, intellectual, campaigner and public figure.

Curated by biographer and art historian Frances Spalding, the exhibition includes distinctive portraits of Woolf by her Bloomsbury Group contemporaries Vanessa Bell and Roger Fry and photographs by Beresford and Man Ray, as well as intimate images recording her time spent with friends and family. Woolf’s early life and literary achievements, alongside lesser known aspects of her time in London and political views, are brought into focus through in-depth research and a remarkable array of personal objects including letters, diaries and books.

Naissance de l'impressionnisme: La liberté de peindre

9 juillet - 20 octobre 2014
http://www.nact.jp/

John Ruskin. Artist and Observer

4th July 2014 - 28th September 2014
www.nationalgalleries.org

John Ruskin (1819-1900) is renowned as the greatest British art critic of the nineteenth century and the champion of Turner, but his role as an artist remains relatively little known.  He was however an outstanding draughtsman and watercolour painter, who especially took inspiration from the natural world and architectural subjects. This exhibition will illustrate, with the finest examples, the range and quality of his drawn and painted work. Gothic palaces in Venice, wild and spectacular Scottish and Alpine landscapes, and minutely defined and brilliantly coloured birds and plants will all be highlights of the show. The loans will chiefly come from the key UK and US collections (both public and private), and the exhibition is a prestigious collaboration with the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.

It is especially fitting that John Ruskin: Artist and Observer should be showcased in Edinburgh, as Ruskin came from a Scottish family, visited Scotland many times, and was a passionate advocate for the beauty of its landscapes and literary heritage. Key episodes in his public and private life were enacted here.

Emil Nolde

Emil Nolde (1867-1956) is one of the most important representatives of German Expressionism, but his close connection with Denmark – both biographically and geographically – also makes him a part of Danish art history. Nolde is known for the powerful, intensely colourful expression that typifies his subjects, whether they are depictions of flowers, figures or landscapes.
Over the years several thematic exhibitions have been mounted both in Denmark and abroad, but Louisiana’s summer exhibition is the first major retrospective presentation of the painter for several decades. The exhibition casts a present-day glance at Nolde’s extensive and composite oeuvre and seeks new perspectives on material well known to many people. It gathers up strands and addresses all the genres in which the artist worked. The 140 or so works in the exhibition, which cover the whole of the artist’s active period, comprise paintings, watercolours, drawings and prints as well as several works not previously exhibited
