29th September 2013 - 6th January 2014

This exhibition consists circa 100 paintings and works on paper drawn from notable private collections. The focus will be on the French avant-gardes of the late nineteenth century, with special attention to the Neo-Impressionist, Nabi, and Symbolist movements. Major artists will be examined in depth: Paul Signac, Maximilien Luce, Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis, Felix Vallotton, and Odilon Redon. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with essays by scholars Bridget Alsdorf (Princeton University), Marina Ferretti Bocquillon (Musée des Impressionnismes), and Gloria Groom (Art Institute of Chicago). Magritte: The Mystery of the Ordinary, 1926–1938

www.moma.org
28th September 2013 - 12th January 2014

This exhibition, organized in collaboration with The Menil Collection, Houston, and The Art Institute of Chicago, is the first to focus exclusively on the breakthrough Surrealist years of René Magritte, creator of some of the 20th century’s most extraordinary images. Beginning in 1926, when Magritte first aimed to create paintings that would, in his words, “challenge the real world,” and concluding in 1938—a historically and biographically significant moment just prior to the outbreak of World War II—the exhibition traces central strategies and themes from the most inventive and experimental period in the artist’s prolific career. Displacement, transformation, metamorphosis, the “misnaming” of objects, and the representation of visions seen in half-waking states are among Magritte’s innovative image-making tactics during these essential years.

Bringing together some 80 paintings, collages, and objects, along with a selection of photographs, periodicals, and early commercial work, the exhibition offers fresh insight into Magritte’s identity as a modern painter and Surrealist artist. A richly illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition.

The Russian Avant-garde, Siberia and the East. Kandinsky, Malevich, Filonov, Goncharova

27 September 2013 – 19 January 2014
www.palazzostrozzi.org

The Russian Avant-garde, Siberia and the East, is the first international exhibition to examine the fundamental importance of the Oriental and Eurasian connection to Russian Modernism. The exhibition follows the destinies of Russia’s self-proclaimed “Barbarians” in their search for new sources of artistic inspiration and demonstrates how modern Russian culture experienced a deep attraction to – and an apprehension of – the exotic, the unknown and the “Other”, which artists and writers identified with the spirit of the taiga, the virgin territories of desert and steppe and the “otherness” of Oriental culture.

The exhibition underscores, displaying 130 works (79 paintings, watercolors and drawings, 15 sculptures and 36 Oriental artefacts and ethnographical objects) divided into 11 sections, the complex relationship Russian artists experienced with the Orient, Wassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Natal’ia Goncharova, Mikhail Larionov, Leon Bakst, Alexandre Benois, Pavel Filonov. These prime movers of the Avant-garde were deeply aware of the importance of the East and contributed to the rich debate which left a profound and permanent imprint on their creative imagination.

In addition to the heroes of the Russian Avant-garde, this exhibition will also acquaint the visitor with other, less familiar but strikingly original, artists of the day such as Nikolai Kalmakov, Sergei Konenkov and Vasilii Vatagin, many of whose works are being shown in the West for the first time.

Il Volto del '900. Da Matisse a Bacon Capolavori dal Centre Pompidou

www.artpalazzoreale.it/‎
25 Settembre 2013 - 19 Febbraio 2014

Masculine / Masculine. The Nude Man in Art from 1800 to the Present Day.

www.musee-orsay.fr
24th September 2013 - 2nd January 2014

As surprising as it may seem, it wasn’t untilNäckte Männer [Nude Men], organised by the Leopold Museum in Vienna (October 2012-March 2013), that a major exhibition tackled the representation of the nude man, a theme that is nonetheless a key element in Western art.

With Masculine / Masculine, the Musée d'Orsay wanted to continue this project and to show that declarations of aesthetic faith, dogma and artistic attitudes of the 19th century relating to male nudity, have their origins in the Classicism of the 18th century, an influence that continues today.

Organised around powerful themes, the exhibition establishes a genuine dialogue between paintings, sculptures, graphic arts and photographs, weaving threads through different eras with unexpected yet productive confrontations, and where contemporary works shed new light on previous centuries.

The Springtime of the Renaissance: Sculpture and the Arts in Florence, 1400-60

www.louvre.fr
23rd September 2013 - 6th January 2014

It focuses on those 60 years that changed the whole history of art, scarred by the discovery of perspective and the adoption of realistic models derived from classical sculpture: the cornerstones of Reinassance.
The pieces featured at Palazzo Strozzi really sum up the revolutionary contents of the art produced in that period, and if you have studied history of art you'll be delighted to see many works of art you already know (if you're intimate with Florence museums, especially with Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, you probably have already seen them many times). This is why this exhibition is so special: it allows you to have a global view on the first Renaissance exposing the most important and beautiful products of it.

http://5th.moscowbiennale.ru/
20.09. - 20.10.2013

Matisse and Fauvism

www.albertina.at
20th September 2013 - 12th January

The Albertina will present a major exhibition comprising some 140 works by Henri Matisse and the Fauves, whose works are nowadays considered true trailblazers of Modernism. Besides Henri Matisse, the movement included André Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck, Georges Braque, and Kees van Dongen.

19.09.2013—20.10.2013
http://www.vmdpni.ru

http://www.rusmuseum.ru/

Jordaens 1593 - 1678: The Pride of Antwerp

www.petitpalais.paris.fr
19th September 2013 - 19th January 2014

Of the three greats of 17th-century Flemish painting – Rubens, Van Dyck and Jordaens – Jordaens is perhaps the least known in France, having never had a major retrospective in this country. Now, the Petit Palais is taking on the challenge: in the field of classical painting Jordaens: the Pride of Antwerp is set to be the major event of the upcoming Paris exhibition season.

Backed up by superb scenography and numerous loans of remarkable works from leading French and International museums, this retrospective will restore Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678) to his rightful place as the pride of Antwerp. Still hard at work more than thirty years after Rubens' death in 1640, Jordaens’ long career and the ability to turn out sizable, dazzling canvases with the assistance of a rigorously organised workshop, saw him provide a whole section of Europe with altar paintings and large, mythological compositions. At a time when Antwerp was in decline as the Continent's economic capital, Jordaens kept its prestige alive with the sheer abundance and colourfulness of his artistic output.

On loan from collections not only in Belgium, but also in Russia, America, Sweden, Hungary, Jerusalem, Madrid and Vienna, the 120 works on show at the Petit Palais are an eloquent testimony to the extent and variety of his inspiration: from family portraits to large religious works, from the famous Flemish Proverbs series to banquet scenes, such as The King Drinks and tapestry cartoons. Here, we see a bourgeois man who hardly ever left his home city drawing on a host of sources ranging from Rubens to Caravaggio, the Venetian Renaissance masters and the heritage of antiquity, and combining them with the personal verve that won him international renown.

http://www.tretyakovgallery.ru/

Desire & Sensuality: Victorian Masterpieces

www.musee-jacquemart-andre.com
13th September 2013 - 20th January 2014

This exhibition invites you to discover the artists famous in England during the reign of Queen Victoria in the 19th century, including Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912), Sir Frederic Leighton (1830-1896), Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) and Albert Moore (1841-1893). The fifty or so paintings exhibited reflect the common desire of the artists of this period to pay homage to the “cult of beauty”.

As the leading world power in the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901), Great Britain paved the way for extensive economic and social upheaval. Against a backdrop marked by puritanism, the artists expressed a sensual aesthetic with paintings offering a sharp contrast to the severity and moralising attitudes of the day: a return to Antiquity, nude women, sumptuous decorative paintings and poetic and literary expression with medieval compositions, a legacy from the Pre-Raphaelites.

The very essence of the work of these artists, who made beauty an absolute and an art of living, was to seek the aesthetic. Women were the main subject of this artistic style known as the “Aesthetic Movement”. Their bodies were no longer hampered as they were in everyday life but nude, symbolising a form of sensuous pleasure and feminine desire. Portrayed in a reinvented living environment, women are transformed into heroines from Antiquity or medieval times. Nature in all its abundance and sumptuous palaces serve as decors for these sublime, lascivious, sensual, amorous, kindly or evil women. Painting becomes a waking dream, with an abundance of symbols.
