The Douanier Rousseau. Archaic Candour.

22 March - 17 July 2016
http://www.musee-orsay.fr

An extremely unusual painter, Henri Rousseau is a unique figure in the history of European art. His work is, however, in keeping with his time, the dawn of the 20th century : the exhibition compares his painting with several of his sources of inspiration, which included both academic painting and new painting, and with the avant-garde artists who enthroned him as the father of modernity, The Douanier Rousseau. Archaic Candour is a critical investigation of his art based on a consideration of the notion of archaism.

Russia and the Arts: The Age of Tolstoy and Tchaikovsky

17 March - 26 June 2016
http://www.npg.org.uk

Russia and the Arts is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a selection of masterpieces on loan from the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. The exhibition will focus on the great writers, artists, composers and patrons, including Tolstoy, Chekhov and Dostoevsky, whose achievements helped develop an extraordinary and rich cultural scene in Russia between 1867 and 1914. It will also show how Russian art of the period was developing a new self-confidence, with the penetrating Realism of the 1870s and 1880s later complemented by the brighter hues of Russian Impressionism and the bold, faceted forms of Symbolist painting.

In the Age of Giorgione

12 March — 5 June 2016
https://www.royalacademy.org.uk

Trace the development of ideas that changed the course of art in this highly original exploration of the Venetian Renaissance. Bringing together iconic paintings by masters such as Titian and Giorgione, we shed new light on a pivotal yet little-understood moment in the history of art.

This fascinating exhibition seeks to unravel the complex web of influences that shaped the work of many of the most celebrated names in Renaissance art. Masterpieces by Giorgione will be displayed side by side with works by Giovanni Bellini, Albrecht Dürer, Titian, Sebastiano del Piombo and Lorenzo Lotto, among others. Visitors will also have the opportunity to rediscover Giovanni Cariani, a great but now unfamiliar artist in their midst.

CUBISM – CONSTRUCTIVISM – FORM ART

10. März 2016 to 19. Juni 2016
http://www.belvedere.at/

The exhibition Cubism – Constructivism – Form Art explores the creative hotbed that from 1900 onwards gave rise to an entire network of interrelated art. The show is the first to illustrate the preconditions of related artistic styles within the Austro-Hungarian empire that would ultimately culminate in abstraction. Broadly considered, there are no obvious connections between Viennese FORM ART and Cubism in Prague, as both developed their distinctive characteristics at a slightly different time.

Botticelli Reimagined

5 March 2016 - 3 July 2016
http://www.vam.ac.uk

Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) is recognised as one of the greatest artists of all time. His celebrated images are firmly embedded in public consciousness and his influence permeates art, design, fashion and film. However, although lauded in his lifetime, Botticelli was largely forgotten for more than 300 years until his work was progressively rediscovered in the 19th century.  Telling a story 500 years in the making, Botticelli Reimagined will be the largest Botticelli exhibition in Britain since 1930. Including painting, fashion, film, drawing, photography, tapestry, sculpture and print, the exhibition will explore the ways that artists and designers have reinterpreted Botticelli. It will include over 50 original works by Botticelli, alongside works by artists such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris, René Magritte, Elsa Schiaparelli, Andy Warhol and Cindy Sherman

Van Dyck: The Anatomy of Portraiture

March 2, 2016 to June 5, 2016
http://www.frick.org

Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641), one of the most celebrated and influential portraitists of all time, enjoyed an international career that took him from his native Flanders to Italy, France, and, ultimately, the court of Charles I in London. Van Dyck’s supremely elegant manner and convincing evocation of a sitter’s inner life — whether real or imagined — made him the favorite portraitist of many of the most powerful and interesting figures of the seventeenth century. This is the most comprehensive exhibition ever organized on Van Dyck’s activity and process as a portraitist and the first major exhibition on the artist to be held in the United States in over twenty years. Through approximately one hundred works, the exhibition explores the astounding versatility and inventiveness of a portrait specialist, the stylistic development of a draftsman and painter, and the efficiency and genius of an artist in action. Lenders include the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the British Museum and National Gallery in London, the Prado Museum in Madrid, and major private collectors such as the Duke of Devonshire and the Duke of Buccleuch.

Caravaggio and his Followers

from 01 March 2016 to 12 June 2016
www.nmwa.go.jp/

The new evocative representations of reality, a dramatic use of light, the absolute originality of his iconographic inventions and an unprecedented, very particular technique characterize all of Caravaggio’s works, and constitute the essence of his modernity and charm. The Caravaggio “phenomenon” has, in recent decades, seduced the world , with numerous exhibitions celebrated on four continents, and has even gained the colors of a “myth”.

His work has been often associated with that of his followers who in the early decades of the 17th century spread the manner of Caravaggio throughout Europe leading to the extraordinary results achieved by La Tour, Rembrandt and Vermeer.
