Egon Schiele saw himself as a visionary and prophetic artist, František Kupka forged an abstract style of painting infused with spiritist principles, Joseph Beuys called under the rubric “social sculpture” up for social change due to creative actions, and Friedensreich Hundertwasser was an ecological crusader whose spiral paintings were holistic in essence. These pioneering artistic attitudes and developments would have not come about without contact with several “prophets”. Some of these were artist-naturists, others were modern-day Christs, while still others saw themselves as social revolutionaries of a kind. Their relevance for modern art remains a largely untold story. Today, their names – Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach, Gusto Gräser, Gustav Nagel, as well as Friedrich Muck-Lamberty and Ludwig Christian Haeusser – have almost been forgotten. During their lifetime, however, they were widely known among a broad-based public and in avant-garde circles. Artists and intellectuals also admired them, albeit often behind closed doors.

The Prague rerun of the Frankfurt exhibition is presenting over 350 works by various artists. They include Egon Schiele, František Kupka, Johannes Baader, Heinrich Vogeler, Joseph Beuys, Jörg Immendorff, and Friedensreich Hundertwasser as well as a variety of documentation materials.

The exhibition both reveals causalities and establishes unexpected connections. It also embeds the ‘barefoot-prophets’ and the artistic avant-garde in a wide-ranging social historical context.

Natura, mito e paesaggio dalla Magna Grecia a Pompei (VI sec a.C - I sec. d.C.)

I capolavori esposti in mostra esibiscono tutto un percorso basato sull'arte ispirata alla Natura nei suoi molteplici aspetti: dai vasi agli affreschi, dagli oggetti di uso comune alle decorazioni domestiche, la mostra è una vera e propria meditazione, antica ma anche attuale, sulla relazione tra uomo e ambiente dalle origini fino ai nostri giorni.

Fiori, paesaggi, panorami, personaggi mitologici, vedute marine, foreste, animali e vigne fanno da sfondo bucolico a un meraviglioso viaggio nella Natura, reso possibile da importanti prestiti provenienti dal Museo di Napoli, dal Louvre, da Atene, da Berlino e dal British Museum oltre che da raccolte private.

La mostra di Milano accoglie capolavori assoluti della storia dell'arte e, inserendosi con grazia nelle tematiche dell'Expo, apre una riflessione su un tema sempre attuale come quello della pacifica convivenza di un'umanità sempre più irrispettosa e un ambiente sempre più minacciato.

La mostra "Natura, mito e paesaggio dalla Magna Grecia a Pompei" presenta infine in modo poetico un tema che serve da preludio allo sviluppo della concezione artistica europea del paesaggio nel Rinascimento, a partire da Giotto fino a Leonardo da Vinci, cui sono dedicate rispettivamente altre due mostre a Palazzo Reale a questa collegate. 

René Magritte

This exhibition is a retrospective of Belgian artist René Magritte (1898 -1967), one of the foremost painters of the 20th century. Known as a great master of Surrealism, Magritte achieved a unique artistic style that strongly influenced 20th-century art and design and, even today, continues to fascinate people throughout the world. This will be one of the most comprehensive Magritte exhibitions ever held, and the first such exhibition in Japan since 2002. Through the joint cooperation of the Magritte Museum, which opened in Brussels in 2009 as a part of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, the Magritte Foundation, and the organizers in Japan, the exhibition will feature some 130 works from art museums and private collections in more than ten countries.

Prints and drawings from a century of change by England’s great artists

This survey of more than 50 British prints and drawings from the 20th century features rarely seen works from the MFA’s collection as well as recent acquisitions and loans. Ranging from an 1890s drawing of Brittany by Post Impressionist Robert Bevan to a 1999 etching by Lucian Freud—perhaps the greatest figural artist of his generation—this selection presents a surprising mixture of subjects and styles. Highlights of the exhibition are streamlined color linocuts made by Grosvenor School artists Cyril Power, Sybil Andrews, and Lill Tschudi, while abstract works on view demonstrate the “Vorticist” style—a uniquely British variant of Futurism and Cubism. Other sections of the exhibition touch on landscape, architecture, and the music hall; differing depictions of the human figure (including works by Henry Moore and David Hockney); and the British Pop explosion of the 1960s.

Die Liebesgeschichte von Amor und der Königstochter Psyche gehört zu den beliebtesten Motiven der italienischen Kunst des 16. Jahrhunderts wie zahlreiche Gemälde, Skulpturen, Zeichnungen und Drucke noch heute beweisen. Ihren künstlerischen Höhepunkt fand die entflammte Leidenschaft Amors zur bildschönen Psyche in der Ausgestaltung der römischen Villa Farnesina unter der Leitung von keinem geringeren als Raffael. Der Faszination des antiken Mythos spürt das Wallraf nun in einer eigenen Schau nach. Amor & Psyche – Über das Begehren versammelt rund dreißig bekannte graphische Blätter von italienischen und niederländischen Künstlern des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts.

Im Zentrum des Mythos steht das gegenseitige Begehren der beiden Protagonisten – einer Liebe, die die Götter nur solange dulden, wie Psyche ihren Geliebten beim Liebesakt nicht ansieht. Das Objekt der Begierde bleibt für sie also im Verborgenen. Die Ausstellung erzählt von der wechselvollen Entwicklung des antiken Dramas, aber auch von dessen glücklichem Ende: Psyche wird in den Olymp unter die Unsterblichen aufgenommen und darf Amor heiraten.

MASTERWORKS IN DIALOGUE. Eminent Guests for the Anniversary

The fascinating and inspiring comparisons will – both in terms of contents and space – encompass all collections of the Städel Museum: visitors will come upon temporary “partnerships” in about eighty selected places throughout the house to be explored for three and a half months. Jan van Eyck’s “Annunciation” (c. 1434/36) will fly in from Washington, for example, and meet with the master’s “Lucca Madonna” (1437) that resides in the Städel. The two paintings, which rank among the most beautiful and, as regards their contents, most complex Madonnas of the most famous Early Netherlandish artist, were part of the splendid old masters collection of William II, King of the Netherlands, until 1850.

The confrontation of Edgar Degas’s “Musicians in the Orchestra” (1872–1876) with his “Ballet Scene from Meyerbeer’s Opera ‘Robert Le Diable’” (1876) reveals a common ground in terms of both contents and motifs, in particular in regards to the depicted relationship between orchestra and dancers. Bringing together loans such as “Geschlecht mit Klößen (Sex with Dumplings)”, (1963) with paintings from the collection of the Städel Museum like “Acker (Field)”, (1962) elucidates the painter Georg Baselitz’s early work as a crucial position in the history of German twentieth-century painting. The Department of Prints and Drawings will also be visited by works of Elsheimer, Goltzius, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and others

Touching the Past: The Hand and the Medieval Book

Precious historical artifacts, manuscripts preserve some of the finest examples of medieval art. Seen in libraries and museums behind glass, these books have been largely removed from the realm of touch, making it easy to forget that their lavishly illuminated pages were once turned, stroked, stitched, and sometimes even sliced by generations before us. Drawn primarily from the permanent collection, Touching the Past: The Hand and the Medieval Book explores manuscripts as tangible, tactile objects that invited touch and were handled—reverently, carelessly, obsessively, and critically—by medieval audiences.

Klimt und die Ringstraße

Im Boom der Gründerzeit entstand entlang der Wiener Ringstraße eine Fülle an Palais und öffentlichen Prunkbauten. Mit der Ausstellung Klimt und die Ringstraße widmet sich das Belvedere im Sommer 2015 jenen charismatischen Ringstraßenmalern, die ihre Zeit  maßgeblich geprägt haben. Ausgehend vom Oeuvre des Künstlerfürsten Hans Makart spannt sich der Bogen bis zum Triumph des jungen Malerkollektivs der Künstler-Compagnie rund um Gustav Klimt. Rekonstruktionen ganzer Dekorationsensembles führen dem Besucher den glanzvollen Lebensstil der Ringstraßenära vor Augen.
